Kendrick. Is. BACK.
On May 8, 2022, Kendrick Lamar released The Heart Part V, just five days before his upcoming fifth studio album Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers. More than five years between major releases. I cannot contain my excitement because nothing about this pre-album loosie disappoints.
Lil Nas X: More Than a Meme
With the release of his new song “Montero (Call Me by Your Name)” Lil Nas X received his first true hit of public outrage. The outrage stems from the video to his song. However before I get too deep into the meaning of the video and the backlash, it would be a good idea to inform those who may not know of how we got here.
EP Review: Unlocked 1.5
We gather here today though, to talk about that fourth release. The project up for discussion here is Unlocked 1.5. This project is a remix of the original Unlocked project that sees Denzel Curry team up with producer Kenny Beats.
Inaugural JRJV Sports Report “…Huh?” Bracket
Brackets are fun. Click this to check out the bracket that we did on my podcast and fill out the very same bracket for yourself.
Album Review: Anywhere But Here
The Brooklyn rapper released his first proper solo album since 2017’s Nick @ Knight. Caution gained popularity as a member of the hip-hop collective Pro Era. Anywhere But Here acts as a re-coming out party of sorts for the artist, as going over three years without a release for an artist with a smaller following as someone like me could tend to forget about someone like this.
Classic Album Review: The Cool
Lupe Fiasco burst onto the scene with his debut album and the Chicago native showed everyone why Kanye and Jay-Z had been so taken by his rapping. Lupe Fiasco combined pristine story telling, complex rhyme schemes, varied flows, and hard hitting one liners to put out an album that was an instant hit.
Distant EP: Review
The phrase “pleasantly surprised” doesn't even begin to describe my feelings towards this project. I am going to break this down track by track in just a second but this EP delivered in a way I was not expecting and I was genuinely excited to write about it after only a couple listens.
Remembering MF DOOM
Suddenly I was being exposed to the likes of Wu-Tang Clan, Nas, Tupac, Common, and of course, MF DOOM. The first MF DOOM song I heard was “Meat Grinder.” I was taken aback. The beat was wonky and all over the place, yet always felt right, and MF DOOM was using rhyme patterns and flows that Eminem would struggle to top.
Top 10 Most Anticipated Hip-Hop Releases of 2021
The hip-hop release clock never stops. New music is constantly being pushed up, pushed back, re-released, and updated. However, at the end of the year it is always fun to look at what we were supposed to get in the year prior and speculate, based on industry rumors, what we will be getting in the following year.
Top 10 Hip-Hop Albums of 2020
This is my personal top ten hip-hop albums of the year. This is the one blatantly subjective article I will be making this year. I looked through every hip-hop release from this year and compiled a list of every album I had listened to. The list was shorter than I expected but still a lengthy one that made cutting down to ten pretty much impossible.
Top 10 Hip-Hop Artists of 2020
Album sales are not really the best metric for judging a person's level of success, and I am not about to try and dig through charities newsletters to find out who donated the most. However I feel confident in my ability to decide what artists had their stock rise the highest.
Top 10 Hip-Hop Songs of 2020
Today’s list was a particularly hard one to put together. All the other lists have much smaller fields of possible entrants so for me to narrow this year down to its ten best tracks and four honorable mentions was genuinely wreaking havoc on my brain. The other major issue with this list is finding the balance between objectivity and subjectivity.
Music To Be Murdered By - Side B: Review
It has been a very satisfying two weeks in hip-hop. First we got Kid Cudi and Man on the Moon III: The Chosen, and now we get Eminem releasing Music To Be Murdered By - Side B. What this album does is take the original album, and make it a double album.
Man on the Moon III: The Chosen: Review
This article was supposed to come out about 24 hours ago and then it didn’t. The issue I had with this album was there was just too much for me to digest.
Best Hip-Hop Releases: November 2020
Every month we get a brand new crop of hip-hop albums released for the public’s listening pleasure. Usually there are anywhere between five and ten really solid releases that fans of various different genres can appreciate.
Chance the Rapper Killed His Own Career
On July 26, 2019, Chancelor Bennet, known by his rapper name Chance the Rapper, released his debut studio album The Big Day. Since that day, the rapper’s career has not looked the same.
Nightmare Vacation: Review
Rico Nasty’s latest project, Nightmare Vacation, contains sixteen tracks and comes in at just under thirty-nine minutes long. This album is less a Nightmare Vacation and more a dreamscape for bangers
Eminem Albums: Ranked
This article is about to become immediately more controversial. This is not because of the placement of albums, the top three is pretty chalk, but because of my overall opinions on Eminem. I can, and in the future will, make a damn fantastic argument as to why Eminem is the greatest hip-hop artist of all time.
THE HUSTLE CONTINUES: Review
Hey you, ya you come here. Do you enjoy the artistic stylings of the man that brought us “Bandz A Make Her Dance,” an absolutely classic song that we all know and love. Well then boy do I have an album for you.
How I Grade Albums
Reading or watching someone else dissect and review an album you love can be a very disheartening experience. What can be even worse is having no clue what that person cares about when reviewing said album.
